Greetings fellow Coasties,

This week’s meeting was led by the awesome Fiona Smith, who we are very happy to have back with us after a short time away. In her role as Toastmaster, she gave us the theme of Childhood, Family & Community; three important parts of our life that make us who we are.

Table Topics was led today by Alexander Warner who shared his own life experiences along with  questions about childhood memories and being a big kid. For sharing his hard won lessons of playing with fire, Paul Benavidez was awarded Best Table Topics. He left too early to receive his award, but we celebrated in his honor anyhow.

Our first speaker today was Michael Hoffman, sharing his Icebreaker speech about several life experiences that have shaped his identity. Next we heard from Chuck Schwartz and his unique take on the role of mentoring in the club. And finally from Linda Denton, who shared her experience and lessons from giving back to others. Linda achieved her Advanced Communicator Bronze award with this speech, and also took home Best Speaker. You rock, Linda D!

Our evaluators today were Paul Benavidez, Leonard Szymczak, and Michael Whelan. Each offered ideas on what worked and what can be improved for our speakers. For his poise and wisdom, Michael Whelan won Best Evaluator.

Next week we will be having our club’s International Speech and Table Topics Contest. The meeting will be a slightly different format than typical meetings, so please come early and be ready to cast your vote for who you think should represent us at the Area level contests and beyond.

This club contest is the first step on the ladder that leads all the way to the World Championship of Public Speaking. Here is a video of last years winner Presiyan Vasilev.

Looking forward to seeing you all there for the contest.
