Dear Coastmasters,

We had another wonderful meeting this week with our crew of new and established members. Jim McGarigle was our distinguished Toastmaster today, and he gave us the theme of Renegades, and helped us see the amazing community we are part of worldwide.

Table Topics was led today by Heather Estus, who continued the theme of Renegades and asked our members to share their own stories of standing out from the crowd. For his enthusiasm about Steve Jobs, Irving Katz was awarded best Table Topics.

Our speeches today were by Paul Benavidez, Michele Reed and Ryan Foland. Paul volunteered last minute to speak, and gave us an important insight into the need for women to learn self defense. Michele educated the group about the important skill of Evaluation, and how it helps each member to improve. And finally Ryan shared his tale of halibut hunting and not giving up on his goal! For his skill in telling honest fishing stories, Ryan was awarded Best Speaker.

Our evaluators today were Linda Swift, Brenda Johnson and myself. Each of us did our best to encourage and help the speakers improve, and Brenda was awarded Best Evaluator for her excellent evaluation.

We have two important upcoming events at our club over the next month:

Our club’s International Speech and Table Topics contest is on March 20th. The winning speech and table topics person will go onto the Area contest on March 29th.

The Terry McCann Award is our annual event to recognize one club member who has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to the club, and contributed with passion, skill, fortitude, generosity and focus. Next week we will ask the club members for nominees, and a winner will be picked by the past recipients on April 3rd at our meeting to honor Terry McCann, a long time member of our club, and Past Executive Director of Toastmasters.

Have a great week, and remember as Jim reminded us today ‘the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.”

Have a great week!
