Dear Coastmasters,

Today’s meeting was a more-than-full house, with 25 people packing the room! What a thrill to see so many smiling, enthusiastic members on such a beautiful Dana Point morning.

Colby McFadden was large and in charge from the start, with his facts about Christopher Columbus and the thrill of discovery.

Our Table topics today became the luck of the draw, with Greg White issuing playing cards as the way to choose the next speaker. Each person who shared had the joy of surprise, and the challenge of talking on their feet. Our long time prodigal member Guy Knuf took home the Best Table Topics award with his tale about his football loving father.

Our three speakers today were Michele Reed, with a story about her journey as an evaluator taking home 1st runner up at last weeks Area contest. Michele inspired us all to get out of the box and try some new skills. CW Gruenig gave us an advanced speech, sharing the story of Moe Berg and the reasons he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. And for my first Advanced speech, I delivered a shortened keynote address on the future of our club, and my challenge as a new leader. It seems the message inspired you all enough to award me Best Speaker, and honor I proudly accept.

Our evaluations today were led by the wonderful Fiona Smith, who we are thrilled to have back in the club after a few weeks away. Carter Lee, Amir Farahani and Linda Swift gave us three though-provoking feedback sessions. Amir won Best Evaluator for his excellent evaluation of my speech.

Our past President and speaker extraordinaire Leonard Szymczak won the Area G2 Tall Tales contest last weekend, and will now be competing in the Division G Tall Tales contest on October 26th in Irvine. It would be a wonderful experience for the Coasties to come out and support him as he shares his talents with the crowd. Here is a link to the details, and please let myself or Linda Denton know if you need more information about the Division contest:

Thanks to everyone who came along to today’s meeting. Your energy and talent is what makes Coastmasters one of the very best clubs in the world. Be sure to come back and join us next week, as we all keep growing and becoming amazing speakers.

Your humble President,

Daniel Midson-Short
Coastmasters Club President
